Also, the computer repair technician must repair any computers that require fixing. However, a technicians aren't just a simple mechanics, they are qualified specialists.

Why Are Technicians Specialists?



A diploma or certificate is needed to become a computer repair technician. Getting an education will arm a technician with theoretical knowledge in addition to the practical facets of repair and maintenance. Simply getting training on the job is will not suffice. Knowing how to repair computers is important, but equally as important is knowing why the problem occurred so that steps toward prevention.

A computer repair technician will generally work in an environment that is very specialized. For instance, they could work for a software company, a corporation's IT department, a retail computer store's service center, and many others. Specialized knowledge will be required for each job that technicians from other areas will not have.

Technicians also have to work with equipment that is frequently very specialized; including laptops, PCs, servers, networks, routers, and many others. Also, a company may have applications that are top secret and need a technician on hand to make sure that the most important systems are functioning with maximum efficiency. Because computers are being heavily relied upon by businesses for operations and making decisions, a technician has a critical role in ensuring that everything is running smoothly.



Is Formal Training And Education Necessary?

No, it's not absolutely essential. However, if a computer repair technician doesn't have any formal education/training, then he or she is very limited in what they can do. Those who learn on the job can is typically limited to repair work only.

Also, he or she must be supervised by a qualified technician who can determine the source of the problem. Those who don't have qualifications won't have opportunities for advancement to positions that involve planning and management.



Even if you don't aspire to advance to management positions, getting a diploma is still the best way to go. You could start off with a general course that is short in duration, followed by a specialized course that lasts a longer period of time, perhaps six months or so.

This specialized course would involve an advanced part of computer repair. Working for a year and then taking an advanced course is probably the best course of action. If you go by this plan, you can get your advanced diploma in approximately two years and have work experience as well.
