While many people are talking about the latest and best applications, many fail to realize that all the fancy applications hog a lot of bandwidth. With the computer penetration nearing 100% in most advanced nations, such applications are really putting a lot of strain on the network resources, especially at the core. The OC192 is a perfect answer to support the current and near future needs for the clients.
The success of SONET is built around many important aspects and features, but this article would look at two important ones that relate to the core networks. The first is reliability, which means that the core transmission links have a high degree of network availability. The second is the scalability, which are really allowed SONET to continue to support growing bandwidth demands.
The traditional core links were OC3 and OC12 which connected the regional central offices. However, with a burst in bandwidth demands, they were relegated to supporting remote locations and sometimes even customer sites. The new work horse for the core networks is OC192. This link has a transmission speed of almost 10 Gbps.
Given that SONET at the core network is almost indispensable, it is not surprising that many newer transport technologies are being developed to be compatible with Optical Carrier level 192. A popular solution is the Gigabit Ethernet variant of 10 Gbps. With nearly similarly link speeds, this is being interworked with the SONET standards to ensure seamless connectivity.
The WAN-PHY variant has been developed to interface with SONET and is compatible. However, the LAN-PHY variant does not interface with SONET in its native form. Apart from these GigE solutions, there is the regular pure SONET network infrastructure. In this network Optical Carrier level 192 remains the preferred transport link for all core network connections.
Being a SONET standard, the Optical Carrier level 192 links support redundancy. This is critical for successful operation of any network. With high traffic volumes being transferred through these links, it is imperative that these links do not fail and if they do they can be switched to an alternate link. Without this kind of protection, several thousand customers could be affected by this failure.
It is thus clear that OC192 is truly a great core technology. With the high bandwidth, it is able to support the growing needs from various enterprise and retail customers. At the same time, being a SONET technology, it has all the important reliability mechanisms built into it to ensure smooth connectivity at the core.
